Apparatus

A perfusionist is a skilled technician trained and experienced in operating various equipment associated with cardiopulmonary bypass, ventricular support and other procedures.

The main piece of hardware is the heart-lung machine. This keeps blood circulating around the patient's body supporting the heart, or replacing the heart and lungs temporarily while the heart is stopped.

In early 2004 much of our equipment is to be replaced or updated in order to comply with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland's "Recommendations for Standards of Monitoring and Alarms during Cardiopulmonary Bypass".
