Change Out of Arterial Filter

In the event that the arterial filter is damaged and it is not possible to continue on bypass:

  • Inform the surgeon that you have a problem.
  • If the circuit has an arterial filter bypass line, open this line and clamp the arterial filter inlet and arterial filter outlet, bypass the filter without coming off bypass.
  • If the CPB circuit has no arterial filter bypass line to change the arterial filter, you will now have to come off bypass. Obtain another arterial filter with a 3 way tap attached.
  • Inform the surgeon you are coming off bypass.
  • Double clamp the damaged arterial filter inlet leaving a 2” gap between the clamps.
  • Double clamp the damaged arterial filter outlet leaving a 2” gap between the clamps.
  • Remove and clamp the arterial filter purge line and pressure monitoring line.
  • Cut the damaged arterial filter inlet tubing closest to the filter. Cut the damaged arterial filter outlet tubing closest to the filter.
  • Attach the new arterial filter inlet to the arterial inlet tubing. Attach the new arterial filter outlet to the arterial outlet tubing.
  • Reattach the arterial purge line and pressure monitoring line - remove clamps.
  • Open the 3-way tap to the arterial purge line. Turn the RPM’s on and release the arterial inlet clamp, this will retrogradely fill the outlet portion of tubing.
  • Once primed, circulate and debubble.
  • Open tap back to pressure monitoring line.
  • Re-establish bypass. Note period patient off bypass.
